A Wooden Interpretation of the Brazilian Cuia
Our small team of woodcrafters in Jamaica make a special trip into the coastal forest and hand select the appropriate pieces of reclaimed wood to form these curvaceous beauties. Later, in our workshop, each piece is meticulously handspun on a lathe then finished with additional polishing for a silky smooth hand and natural matte finish. We then add a thin layer of organic coconut oil for an elegant patina and conditioning.
Each piece takes much longer to produce than you may think, from the 50+ years of growth to the months of sun drying and the passion-infused hours spent shaping the block — these gourds represent a capsule of time and evolution. Fused with the spirit of Brazil, here’s our wooden interpretation of the traditional cuia.

Care and Relative Humidity
Treat like a seasoned cast iron pan. Avoid use of harsh soaps, if any is used at all. Condition with natural oils such as coconut or olive every 3–4 weeks. Every piece is water tested for 24 hours before we ship, but due to wood’s natural ability to contract or expand based upon relative environments (humidity and air pressure), your cup may leak. If you encounter a leak anywhere below a half inch from the brim, we’ll replace your cup free of charge. Hairline cracking of the brim and superficial dents and nicks are aspects of this natural product.
For calabash and cuia gourds, rinse with hot water and allow to fully dry before next use. Natural material gourds will naturally darken and cure on their own (some minor mold and mildew are normal) and will be fully cured within 3 months.
